START-Scholarship Programme

START is a scholarship programme for committed and high-achieving pupils with a migration background. START wants to offer to these young people the opportunity of a higher education and, closely connected to this, of better chances for a successful integration. Thus, young migrants in Germany shall experience that they are welcome and that they have a genuine chance. Currently, 23 young migrants are being supported. The state coordination is attached to the RAA.
Conditions for a Start.scholarship are a migration background of the pupils, their parents or grandparents in addition to the pupils’ social commitment and a grade average of 2.5 or better. At the time of application the young people preferably have to attend the eighth or ninth grade. The scholarship expressly aims at pupils of all school forms.
The START-scholarship comprises material and conceptual support.
The material support consists of a monthly educational grant of 100 Euros and a basic PC set up (laptop, printer). The conceptual support consists of compulsory and optional seminars in addition to excursions to private companies and administrative bodies, attending cultural events, individual advice relating to the young people’s school and personal development as well as to their planning of studies and future professions. The START-scholarships are initially provided for one year and in case of constant satisfying performance and social commitment will be extended until a school leaving qualification such as Abitur is achieved.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern START is funded by the non-profit START-Foundation, Deutsche Bank Foundation, the ministry of education, science and culture Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
